SF Service Match: Hack for Humanity, 1st Place

Objective: Solve a Bay Area-related civic issue.

How impactful is the solution for the issue you are hoping to solve?
Design must be easy to use, have fluid interactions and be visually appealing. Must solve a clear community or business need, be concise and organized during presenting.
Have a working prototype with technical guidelines.
Discover & Define: Saturday
The first day of the Hackathon we spent brainstorming ideas. There wera multitude of issues in the Bay Area we wanted to tackle but we were also drawn to helping the two non-profits who came to the Girls in Tech Hack for Humanity to present. Our team worked our whole first day running through ideas that could help pressing issues both broad and specific. We first settled on a digital onboarding process that could be used for the EDC. Then we though broader, what about a platform that could help Bay Area residents understand their options?
By the end of day one we were down to a few ideas, decided we needed a good nights rest and came back the next day ready to work on one of our original concepts, a matching tool.
Develop & Deliver: Sunday
We worked closely with our Product Manager and engineers to decide what this tool would look like. Since we decided on a matching tool, our engineers developed a pattern for residents to be matched with the correct service, or services, they would benefit most from. At the end of their questionnaire they would let the app know if the matches were helpful or not to continue to improve the matching process.
The design inspiration came from our idea of a hermit crab, living somewhere beautiful with its home on its back, independent and a survivor. We took the inspiration of the relaxing views of the beach from there. Our UI would convey a sense of security and serenity.

Working on a balanced team (2 designers, 2 engineers & a Product Manager) gave the team the right diversity of thought and divided out the workloads evenly.

Work through the whole design process. Collabortating and brainstorming for the first full day lets us talk through many scenarios and dial in

Sleep is important! We all came back the hackathon well rested and ready to present after giving ourselves an agreed upon deadline.
- Give your ideas legs. In the future we’d like to see the site match volunteers to programs as well .
